Change, change, change:

  • Industries advance, ideas expand, products morph, and customer move on.
  • Everything is in orbit.
  • With change come questions.

One thing doesn’t change. Many businesses overlook it. But people never change.

Everyone Wants:

  1. Great Insight
  2. Access to Great People
  3. Recognition

What’s wrong with marketing?

  • We’re treating people like fish. We’re taught to create a better lure than competitors and customers will bite.
  • Marketing can’t predict when people are ready to buy.
  • Marketing is everywhere.
  • There are two huge problems:
    • Channel overload syndrome: your customers are being marketed to all the time, so they tune it out.
    • The default position of customers is distrust, but trusting a company trumps good products and services according to an Edelman study.

Three Big Questions Every Business Needs to Ask:

  1. How can I attract quality leads, prospects, and opportunity without actively selling?
  2. Can I gain access to influential people in my industry? Why would they work with me?
  3. Is there an easy way to establish trust with prospects and customers? Can I break through the noise?

The Solution:

  • Focus on People
    • Meet the core desires of people by helping them solve their problems at no cost.
    • When you help people with their smaller problems, many will look to you for their biggest issues.
    • Create content that resonates with people.
    • Rethinking the Rule of Reciprocity
      • Are your gifts really marketing messages in disguise? Don’t be surprised when people don’t engage or reciprocate.
      • Gifts show appreciation, are not earned by recipient, and have no strings attached.
      • True gifts make you valuable to people.

The Formula: Great Content + Other People = Marketing Messages = Growth

Great Content:

  • Invest in quality content, experiences, gathering points and communities where people can find help
  • Two Types of Fuel:
    • Primary – regularly produced content that keeps you moving and is core to growth.
    • Nuclear – harder to produce, so used less frequently, but has a biggest impact.

Other People:

  • Don’t focus on yourself, your products, and your services.
  • Shine the spotlight on others.
  • When you lift people up, they’ll lift you up.

Cage Marketing Messages:

  • Marketing is friction for your rocket ship. The more you try to sell, the more you’ll repel people.
  • Shift from “How can we sell you” to “How can we help you?”

The Elevation Principle in Practice: Primary Fuel

  • Comprehensive How-To Articles
    • Pick topics your readers are interested in
    • Include details
    • Make it readable
    • Use PrintFriendly.com
  • Expert Interviews
    • Tap the knowledge of pros
    • Phone interviews or video
  • Reviews
    • Help your readers make decisions
    • Review books, products, events
    • Screen capture reviews are popular
    • Give your opinion
  • Case Studies
    • Share stories of businesses in your industry
    • Format: problem, solution, results
    • These can lead to strategic partnerships

The Elevation Principle in Practice: Nuclear Fuel

  • Reports Based on Surveys
    • Survey your readers
    • Create a FREE report (add a retweet button to the PDF file)
    • Results are highly viral, good SEO juice, and have a long life
  • Top 10 Contests
    • People love recognition
    • Structure: Ask for nominations, recruit judges, announce finalists, give winners a badge
  • Photo Contests
    • People love to win.
    • It’s fun and personal.

Outside Experts:

  • Most experts could care less about your business.
  • Start thinking “Who can I help?”
  • When you do great things for experts, you don’t need to ask for help.

Why Helping Experts Boosts You:

  • Eliminates perception of the pitch.
  • Reduces rejection.
  • You’ll stand out.
  • May lead to strategic partnerships.

Don’t Ignore the Little Guys:

  • Nobodies from nowhere are today’s somebodies.
  • Look for diamonds in the rough.

Remember: People want access to great insight, great people, and recognition more than great products.
