In 2002 Darren started his first ever blog – not knowing that what would start as a personal hobby site would grow into a full time profession and multi-million dollar business.

Since that time Darren has been involved in publishing over 30 blogs but now is active on two as founder and editor:

His two main blogs are read by around 5 millions unique visitors a month. Together they have over 200,000 forum members and 900,000 subscribers.

In this session, he talks about not only how to be a passionate blogger, but also how to be strategic at the same time.

  • Inspire: People are looking for inspiration because our own lives aren’t always inspirational.
  • Be Personal: This helps you connect with your community.

Blog Smart:

If you want your blog to be a business one day, treat it as one TODAY.

  • Define Success: Know what you’re aiming for, otherwise you can’t achieve it.
  • Know Your Reader: Put together a persona for each type of reader you want to reach.
  • Branding: What do you want people to say about you when you’re not in the room?
  • Marketing: You can build a great blog, but you have to also tell people about it. Where are your readers already living online?
  • Hooks: How are you going to get people to your blog? And what do you want readers to do?
  • Create Something to Sell: Ads can be great, but creating product can take your income to another level. It also reinforces your brand.
  • Editorial Strategy: Think about the type of posts you’re publishing. You want to help people as well as write viral content. Frequency matters too.
  • Experiment, Test, and Tweak: Constantly try new things, and test how it’s doing so you can improve.
